Short answers from the Arcangel FAQ. For fees and steps, see provisional patent cost and how to file.
- What is the difference between a provisional and a non-provisional application?
- A provisional secures an earlier filing date when it includes enough written disclosure (and drawings if required), pays the fee, and is filed as provisional. You then have 12 months to file a non-provisional that claims priority, only if the later claims are supported by what you already disclosed.
- Can I file the patent myself instead of having Arcangel file?
- Yes. After intake and a novelty review, you can self-file: Arcangel prepares the application and you submit it. That is $150 for a provisional or $1,000 for a non-provisional, plus USPTO fees.
- Or choose attorney review. A licensed attorney reviews and files it. That is $400 for a provisional or $5,000 for a non-provisional, plus USPTO fees.
- Does “filed” mean “granted”?
- No. Filing means you are in line for examination. Examiners can reject claims or require amendments; you respond until the case is allowed, abandoned, or otherwise resolved.
